讲座人介绍

Professor Yang Zhang holds the Chair in Combustion and Energy at the University of Sheffield. His research group specialises in both fundamental and practical combustion research using imaging based flame and flow diagnostics. The philosophy is to gain as much as information as possible from a single camera and a single view window. His group has developed imaging and processing techniques that can perform data analysis from 1D to 4D. The 3D tracking of big particles is one of his interests. Many of the methodologies and results are unique. He graduated in Zhejiang University with a BEng in cryogenic engineering. Then he worked in a controlled nuclear fusion research institute for two years before pursuing his PhD degree at Cambridge University. He then worked as a combustion researcher at Cambridge and Manchester before moving to Sheffield.

讲座内容

Hydrogen is the simplest element in the universe. It powers the nuclear fusion in the stars such as our sun. On earth it has the promise to be a ‘clean’ fuel to power our ever energy demanding society. The combustion properties of a hydrogen flame are very different from hydrocarbon fuels. The understanding of its combustion properties is far from complete. In this talk, the so far misunderstood hydrogen flame light emissions will be demonstrated through experimental tests. Possible theories of photon emissions will be discussed. It’s a misconception even among the well-established combustion scientist that a hydrogen flame should be colourless and the flame should have been polluted by other materials if it were visible. For example, in the infamous Hindenburg Airship disaster, the eyewitness of the huge orange fireball was considered to be from the carbon material in the airship. Our latest tests and other incomplete research all indicate that hydrogen flame light emission can be very complex and it is highly dependent on the combustion process. To understand this will help to understand hydrogen combustion and its safety further.
