讲座人介绍

Ken-ichi Ueda was born in Osaka, Japan in 1946. He received Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Tokyo in 1977. Between 1971 and 1976 he was a senior researcher of JEOL R&D center. Between 1976 and 1981 he was a research associate of Physics Department of Sophia University in Tokyo. In 1981 he joined to the Institute for Laser Science (ILS) of the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo (UEC-Tokyo) as an associate professor. He worked for 22 years as a professor 1990-2012 and as a director 1995-2012 in ILS/UEC-Tokyo. He is retired from UEC-Tokyo in 2012. He is still a special appointed professor of UEC-Tokyo and the Institute of Laser Engineering of Osaka University. He was a leading scientist of the Mega Grant Program of the Russian Federation in the Institute of Applied Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences 2012 - 2017. Currently, He is an advisor of Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. and a supervisor of JST PRESTO till 2021.

He is interested in a wide area of laser science during his carrier, for example, inorganic liquid lasers, glass lasers, CO2 lasers, excimer lasers, ultra-stabilized lasers, ultra-high quality optics, ceramic lasers, and high power fiber lasers. He applied laser technique to IFE drivers, gravitational wave detection, and industrial applications. He received OSA fellow, JSAP fellow, Sakurai Award, Quantum Electronics & Optics Award, Nikkei BP Award and others for the development of ceramic lasers and high power fiber lasers. Japan government gave him the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2011 and Ministry of Science and Culture Award in 2010. He is a member of Science Council of Japan since 2002. In 2016, the Russian Academy of Sciences elected him as a foreign member.

Prof. Ken-ichi Ueda published more than 513 papers in the international journals and his citation number is over 11625. He has a big experiences on the journal editors, for example, Applied Optics, JOSA B, Optical Review, Laser Physics Letters, Quantum Electronics, Rev. of Laser Engineering, High Power Laser Science and Engineering and so on.

讲座内容

Pure scientific project like gravitational wave detection is far away from the practical applications and other field, many people believe like this. This is not true from my experiences. Gravitational wave detection has been recognized as a most useless work for our life. I developed several important laser technologies such as a kW-class fiber laser, ceramic lasers, and coherent beam combining technique in our gravitational wave detection program 1990-2000. Today, these are the key techniques for the ultra-high peak power laser over 100 PW for the fundamental research works on the vacuum science where the electro-positron pair can be created by high intensity photons. I talk about the relation between pure science and technological development. Creation of new concept and ideas are most critical and important.
