Dr. Dong is currently an Associate Professor in the department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at the College of Engineering and Applied Science in the University of Cincinnati (UC).  She is the director of UC Center for Robotics Research. Dr. Dong’s teaching and research areas are in the product development and manufacturing, control and automation, robotics and intelligent systems, and robotic applications/integrations in medical and industrial fields. She has extensive collaboration experience of applying robotics technology to other fields within UC and outside of UC. She is the executive board member of Society of Manufacturing Engineers Cincinnati chapter. She serves as a review panelist in Engineering Technology Mechanical/Manufacturing TAG for the Ohio Board of Regents.
 
讲座内容     There are trench drains along the highways in US. Due to weathering and traffic, the drains would accumulate dirt inside and eventually get full, therefore lose its function of draining water. The typical cleaning method is water jet method. The disadvantages of this method includes interfering with traffic, heavy machinery needed, debris spill all over places, not only messy but also need additional cleaning. The purpose of this project is to develop a novel method for the cleaning of trench drains. It deals with the design, conceptualization and testing of a robot which fits into the drain and cleans it without needing to interfere with the surrounding traffic or the drain itself. The robot had to be capable of driving itself forward and backward in the drain. It had to transport the dirt from the drain to an attached vacuum cleaning unit present at the starting point. It had to ensure that the amount of debris remaining in the drain after cleanup does not stop the movement of the robot inside the drain.
