讲座人介绍 Robert Edwards is Reader in Mobile Communications at Loughborough University, UK, Director of the 5G Research Centre and Director of China Strategic Partnerships. He is a visiting Professor at Xidian University , Xi’an and Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing.

His current main academic task is a Global Challenges Research Fund project that is developing an emergency information water information network to predict floods using cellular networks. Flooding is the most severe of natural disasters humanity has to cope with concerning the loss of life, and the long-term effects of flooding have severely adverse social consequences. Unlike the UK that has a good flood defence system, many countries have not been able to afford the technology and have a poor response to flooding. However, many developing countries do now have access to modern cellular phone networks in their towns and cities. So in this project, will discover how to use mobile phone networks combined with WiFi to help countries tackle climate change.
讲座内容 Radio technologies that take advantage of multiple input, multiple output antennas rely on multipath for diversity while other older technologies may suffer from inter-symbol interference due to that same multipath. Therefore, delay spread, which is a measure of the richness of the multipath in an area, is a key metric in the specification of any radio system. It may also be more critical for the higher frequencies proposed for 5G. In spaces such as offices, shops, supermarkets and workshops, the surfaces and edges of the inventory of machines, shelves, and furniture within them is a crucial element that dictates the multipath/power delay profile of the setting. Fast construction of buildings does not allow for delay spread measurements to be taken before completion. Therefore, the design of radio provision may be less than optimal in many scenarios. For the first time in this paper, we propose a way to reliably estimate delay spread using a fractal algorithm that mimics typical inventory in workshops. At common frequencies for current and future communications systems, emulated catalogue based on fractal shapes is validated using an actual list and measurements of power delay profiles supported by geometric ray tracing.
