讲座人介绍 Xinming Huang is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and Director of the Embedded Computing Lab. Dr. Huang received his PhD in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech in 2001. After that, he joined the Bell Labs of Lucent Technologies as a Member of Technical Staff with the wireless advanced technology laboratory. . He was a recipient of DARPA young faculty award in 2007, IBM faculty award in 2004 and the Central Bell Labs annual excellence award in 2002. Currently his research interests are in the areas of hardware/software design for autonomous vehicles, Internet of Things, and advanced wireless communication systems.
讲座内容 Abstract: Since Google’s self-driving cars first debut in 2010, many auto manufacturers and research institutions are now working on the development of future autonomous cars. In this talk, we will present our current research on driverless cars and advanced driver assistance systems. The main focus will be computer vision and machine learning algorithms and their real-time implementations on software/hardware platforms. The computer vision research results include lane detection and front collision warning, traffic sign detection and classification, traffic light detection and recognition, road marking detection; vehicle detection; pedestrian detection, and road scene segmentation. Applying deep neural network technique, we also build an end-to-end controller for automatic steering based on camera data. Our research group has collected a large amount of data using multi-spectrum sensors, such as camera, LiDAR, thermal imaging, and CAN bus recorder, while driving a test vehicle on the road. In addition, we have built GPU and FPGA-based hardware accelerators aimed at running the sophisticated autonomous driving algorithms at real-time.  The hardware accelerators can achieve orders of magnitude speed-up when compared to the performance of a traditional CPU processor. Our research goal is to develop the key technologies for self-drive cars and demonstrate on a prototype vehicle. We actively seek collaboration with researchers at Xi’Dian University to solve important research problems towards future intelligent transportation systems.
